We're the Higgins family from Salt Lake City. This is our fifth year following the Iditarod. Our 9 and 8 year olds follow the race and do the activities after school, and the race will be a big part of our homeschooling for our 7 and 3 year olds this year.

Hi,
Karen with Kayla, 3rd grade homeschooler, here in Georgia. Tad warm at the moment- send us some snow, please.

This is our second year but we really just followed the race last year. That was exciting. We are hoping to be more active in the projects that were listed.

We just found out that our grandson from TX has an Uncle in Alaska - very much involved with all this. Fun to find out how small this big world really is. I now have 2 relatives that live in Alaska. :)

Happy Mushing to you all- Karen

Hi! We are a homeschooling family from Michigan. My children are 15, 13, 7 & 3. I only homeschool the two younger children. We followed the race last year and my son fell in love with it! While doing research for this we found out we have cousins that live in Alaska! How cool! Last year our musher did very well and now my son wants to pick the same one - it'll be hard to convince him to choose another musher! Have FUN!!!!

We followed the same musher for 4 years. (We followed the one veteran, plus a rookie every year). He's now taking a couple of years away from the race, so we'll be picking a new veteran to follow, but it can be interesting following the same musher and seeing how that year's training, race conditions, etc. affect that team's performance.

Homeschoolers from Portland, OR here! This is our first year participating. My husband used to raise Huskies, including his best friend "Try" who actually rescued him from a blizzard.

I teach grades 3 and 6 (when we are actually "home"), and enjoy staying active in the wonderful homeschool communities around town.

Dad, mom, son (11) and daughter (9) are looking forward to this adventure!

We are also a homeschooling family. We are from Michigan. The last few days has been in the 60's. That is unbelievable for us. My children, son age 7 and daughter age 2 will be following the race again this year. My son loved it last year. There is a lapbook project on the Iditarod at www.homeschoolingestore.com. It is great. We had a lot of fun with it last year. Have fun this year.

Hi!
We are a homeschooling family from the small town of Callicoon, NY. We have a 2 yr. old son and a 6 yr. old daughter. We just finished reading the short story of Balto in "Five True Dog Stories," by Margaret Davidson and luckily found this project to go along with it.

My uncle visited Alaska last year and watched the start of the race and I own and used to fly an Alaskan bush plane (before the kids came along and I had more time on my hands) called an Arctic Tern, out of our family airstrip in upstate NY. A friend who worked in Alaska as a bush pilot, flew the plane down from Ankorage for me, as I was a newly licensed pilot at the time with only 100 hours of flying time under my belt. So these have been my only connections with the beautiful state of Alaska so far, but we look forward to more through this project. : ) Happy Winter Everyone! Sondra B.

Hello all,

I am a 5th & 6th grade computer teacher in southwest Missouri. It looks like we have several teachers from our great state. I have done this project in the past with my fourth grade class. Last year I did the project with all 500 or so of my 5th & 6th graders. (We did not get signed up in time, so we did our own version). This year I will be doing this project with approximately 300 5th graders. The kids love the project. Last year we made musher trading cards and Power Points on the computer. For you public school teachers out there, you can get a free poster from Cabela's

http://www.cabelasiditarod.com/poster_contact.html

but hurry, they only give away a total of 6000. Also, I think they will have a downloadable version available for others.

The unfortunate animal abuse stuff last year provided a great opportunity to learn about caring for animals, laws that protect people and animals etc... For those of you with little kids..the Alaskan map is an easy project to make!We also watched the movie Balto alot!I'm very excited to connect with all of these homeschoolers! susan

We are the Dye Family from Corvallis, OR. We followed last year, but will do much more this year. The boys (6 and 4) are already so excited, we had to start yesterday! We made a relief map of AK with cookie dough, chocolate chips, and any other candy they could find. We traced the trail with icing and used gumdrops with toothpicks and flags to mark the checkpoints. They LOVED it! And it made for a very tasty dessert for all of us to enjoy!

2 great books we read last year were: Winterdance by Gary Paulson, which needed to be edited for younger kids but had fantastic stories, and No End In Sight: My Life as a Blind Iditarod Racer by Rachael Scdoris. Very interesting! We look forward to hearing all your great ideas as well! Thanks Walter for all your hard work!

I followed the race with some loom knitters a couple of years ago, yet not since. Of our 5 sons the 2-3 that are home are 14 5/6, 11 11/12, and 9. The older one is part time at the local government school, so he may not join us on this. He has 13 subjects between booth high schools and not enough day.

I hope I am not in over my head by joining in on this. I go by Shalifa (my Arabian Horse, RIP), Ang W. or Angela. I was told about this though some local home educators.

Hi! We are an unschooling family in Laguna Hills, CA -- about 15 minutes So. of Disneyland, 10 minutes E. of Laguna Beach, and an hour N. of San Diego!

DD Megan (14-1/2) attends 9th grade at our local public school (her choice) and dd Molly (5-3/4) is home with me! I have my teaching credential and dh David is a software/hardware engineer.

We are very excited to be joining in on the Iditarod fun for the first time! We have a snow capped mountain view from our living room, but actually live about 1-1/2 hours from snow. And since it's been quite warm lately, we may turn on the air conditioning and put on scarves to get in the mood!

We have some time restraints in the next month, so … we will be purchasing the trail map from the Iditarod store, laminating it, and using wipe on/off markers to follow the race.

Hi, we are yet another homeschooling family from Virginia. We've already learned a lot in just the short time since we've started on the project. Our 8th grader is already recommending the book Race Against Death by Seymour Reit.

This is regarding Andi in VA's comments about finding "disturbing articles on the web regarding the abuse of the dogs, both during training as well as during the race itself".

I just wanted to note that with an event such as the Iditarod, with such world wide recognition and news coverage, you have to know that if there were ANY shenanigans or problems regarding the animals, it would be WELL documented by many a reliable source.

This event affects many peoples lives in substantial ways. They rely on it not only for recreation and entertainment but many people's businesses and careers are based on it. It is so very rare that anyone who truly relies on their animals for their lively hood, transportation or in this case, even their lives, would risk being cruel or abusive to an animal.

Unfortunately, there are too many biased organizations, including the Old Network news media, trying to push their agendas and they are not concerned with hurting people, their reputations or with telling the truth. Thank you.

Hi!

We are the Fifth Grade (Room 117) from Saint Eleanor School in Collegeville, PA. We have just finished our map of the Iditarod and are ready to start the selection process for our class musher. Our partner Fifth Grade class is also involved in this project and our two mushers will be competing against each other at our school. We have participated in several collaboration projects using the Internet and can't wait for the race to begin.

We are a homeschooling family who relocated to Tri-Cities, WA, from VA, about a year ago. This coming summer we will be cruising to AK with Homeschool on the Seas, and as I was beginning to have our children do some reading to prepare, I stumbled across an article in The Old Schoolhouse magazine that listed this project.

I then realized that the race was happening in just two weeks! Eeeek! I have spent a feverish weekend putting together a great unit study. We will have to put up with mere map printouts and we missed the mail call, but otherwise, we are dropping our normal routine and plunging in.

We have two students in our homeschool, an 11yo girl and a 9yo boy. The Balto reader has long been a favorite in our home, so I think they will have a great time with this unit study. Thanks to Walter for letting me join late.

Hi! We're the Williams Family Homeschool, from Prince William County in Northern Virginia--seven kids, ages 11,9,7,6,4,4, and 2.5 years. This is our second year in the project (we followed unofficially last year due to moving in the middle :), and we love it.

We do math, language arts, geography and science, all while studying the Iditarod. The younger kids study the Arctic animals, plants, and Native Americans, as well as how to care for the sled dogs (and read about Balto, of course!). The older kids read more indepth, and several longer books--this year we are also actually studying the race rules more than earlier years.

The two oldest had the opportunity to participate in a Dogsledding "camp" in Maryland in January, where they learned how to care for the dogs, put on the harnesses, and ride along! They were so excited! We look forward to participating with everyone in the project again this year.

We're the McMichael family from the Philadelphia PA region. Our kids are 9, 12 and 14, and this is our first year following the Iditarod! We have long been Balto fans and have visited "him" in Central Park, and when an email came through one of our homeschool groups about following this amazing race online, I couldn't pass this up. We also learned that one of the mushers is from a neighboring town, so we're anxious to see how this plays out!

Hi. We are a third grade class from Grand Rapids, Michigan. We've had a very snowy winter. Just this weekend we passed the 100 inch mark for snowfall this year. We are most interested in learning about the biomes of Alaska, recording the weather during the race, and following the mushers during this big challenge.
